Overview
Pets on Wheels (PoW) is a Maryland-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through therapy pet visits. We are seeking a passionate, organized, and strategic Executive Director to lead the organization’s operations, programs, and outreach. This individual will serve as PoW’s primary leader, public representative, and strategic manager, ensuring that our
mission is upheld across all areas of service—from volunteer engagement and partner coordination to fundraising and organizational growth.
This is a fully remote role with regular in-state travel required to support volunteers, facility partners, and community engagement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Governance
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement strategic goals and report regularly on progress.
- Serve as PoW’s primary spokesperson and public representative with professionalism, compassion, and visibility.
- Oversee compliance, policies, and internal systems for daily operations and long-term sustainability.
- Support Board development, engagement, and recruitment efforts.
Program Oversight & Volunteer Management
Lead all program delivery in collaboration with staff and regional leaders, ensuring
high-quality volunteer and partner experiences.
- Hire and manage regional coordinators.
- Maintain regular communication with volunteers to ensure consistency and support.
- Supervise volunteer documentation, pet records, background checks, and health compliance.
- Supervise placement of volunteer therapy pet teams, support regional coordinators to
manage facility relationships, and conduct site visits and evaluations.
Fundraising & Development
- Lead organizational fundraising, including annual campaigns, donor engagement, and sponsorship outreach.
- Identify, research, and write grant proposals in collaboration with support staff.
- Support volunteers and regional leaders in pursuing localized fundraising opportunities aligned with PoW’s mission.
Finance & Administration
- Manage financial records in collaboration with the Treasurer; prepare annual budgets and monthly reports for the Board.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial standards and reporting.
- Oversee day-to-day administrative tasks including contracts, insurance, licenses, and grant reporting.
Communications & Technology
- Develop and execute communications strategies including social media, website (WordPress), and email outreach.
- Maintain a consistent public presence that aligns with PoW’s brand and mission.
- Manage the organization’s CRM/database systems for volunteers and partners.
- Coordinate with webmaster and staff to ensure secure, functional, and up-to-date online tools.
Qualifications
- Proven leadership experience, preferably in nonprofit or mission-driven environments.
- Strong background in volunteer management, partner engagement, or human-animal interaction programs.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in fundraising, grant writing, and donor cultivation.
- Proficiency in technology platforms including QuickBooks, CRM systems, WordPress, and social media.
- Organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working remotely with a distributed team.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly within Maryland.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $62,000 – $67,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
- Reimbursement for approved travel and business expenses.
